In this dog walking diary (!) I’m trying to capture the essence of the seasons, what it’s like to be out at x o’clock at y time of year. At the end of the year I’ll hopefully be able to look back and see lots of different colours and perspectives, I’ll remind myself of the encounters we’ve made (so far: one woodpecker, lots of mud, some people with torches) and the effect will be pleasing enough.
Sometimes though you can’t accurately capture the essence of a walk. If I better understood how my phone’s camera works this may be a possibility, but until then…
In the meantime, at the moment it is cold as day breaks. We are leaving home early and enjoying the crunch underfoot, the lack of people and the exciting feeling of finding our way by moonlight. The moon has been full this week so despite the January darkness we have been able to see, but only just. It’s been curiously exciting. There’s something… mythical… about moonlight.
Does the photo above tell the story? It seems even more bland than my usual but what I’m after this time is the mood rather than any particular thing. The photo looks lighter than it felt like it should, but it is gloomy and dark nevertheless.
Equally, the next photo is included not because It’s a good photo, but because it does capture the feeling of walking a dog in the early morning moonlight. Again, the lighting seems off, but that moon was bright, so the camera’s recording it as such.
